Needs Assessment

Why this education matters.

With only about 340 board-certified pediatric dermatologists in the United States, the need for pediatric dermatology providers is at a high to care for more than 73 million infants, children, and adolescents.

Pediatric and adolescent dermatology has moved from a largely topical, supportive-care specialty to one with systemic, targeted, and biologic options across multiple diseases. New approvals continue to extend into younger patients. Clinicians now make decisions about long-term systemic therapy in children, monitoring requirements, comorbidity screening, and family counseling that did not exist a decade ago. At the same time, demand for pediatric dermatologic care far exceeds the number of pediatric dermatologists in practice.

Advanced practice providers have become central to closing that gap. Dermatology PAs and NPs diagnose pediatric skin disease, prescribe and monitor systemic therapy, manage chronic conditions across years of a child's life, counsel families, and make day-to-day treatment decisions for children and adolescents. Most dermatologic education, however, is still built around the adult patient.
